Dharwad Retired Bank Employee Duped of ₹63 Lakh by Cyber Criminals
Dharwad, EXPRESS News: A 62-year-old retired bank employee from Dharwad has fallen victim to a cyber scam, losing nearly ₹63 lakh after being lured by fraudsters promising substantial payments for old currency notes and coins.
According to the FIR, rhe victim, identified as Shivaram Purohit, a resident of Sattur, Dharwad reported that he had been under digital duress since April 1, making payments until August 22. According to Purohit’s complaint, he stumbled upon an Instagram account named “SNS Investment Old Coin Gallery” based in Mumbai while browsing the platform. The account claimed to collect old coins and notes, offering attractive sums in return.
Believing the offer, Purohit sent a ₹5 note via WhatsApp to the number linked to the account. He was then promised ₹11 lakh for the ₹5 note but was told he needed to pay additional fees first. Trusting the process, Purohit ended up transferring ₹52,12,654 across various transactions.
Additionally, he had seen similar promotions on Quickr, an online marketplace, which prompted him to transfer another ₹10.89 lakh.
Following the incident, the Central Economic Crime (CEN) police have filed a case against the perpetrators under sections 66(d) (cheating by personation) and 66(c) (identity theft) of the Information Technology Act, along with section 318(4) (deceiving any person) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
